Getting Started

First things first. If you’re beginning the plant-based lifestyle journey in full force be sure to communicate with your healthcare provider.  It’s important to partner with your provider in order to receive guidance when weight and cholesterol levels begin to change. Often during transition, medications that you take may need adjustments. It’s possible that some (if not all) may be  eliminated  by your physician. This is a critical reason to undergo this lifestyle change with your health care provider on board.

“Ditch and Switch”

Typically change takes time to become “the new normal” in people’s lives.  Ditching your current diet and switching to the whole food, Plant-based way of eating can seem daunting.   No matter if you ease into the lifestyle (yes, it’s a lifestyle rather than a diet) or if you go “all out” and abandon the standard American or Western diet, it takes desire to change and a commitment to do so.  It also is helpful when support is available.

Support can come in the form of education i.e. books, videos etc. and it can also come in the form of partnering with other like minded individuals.  It’s helpful if  all of the members of a household commits to changing their way of eating but it isn’t “a deal breaker” if not everyone does so.  It might seem more complicated because of meal prep, but with some flexible menus (dishes where meat and/or dairy can be added for those who are interested) it certainly is “doable” to “peacefully coexist”.
